George K. "Coonie" Burtner, 96, of Rocky Mount, VA, formerly of Butler, passed away on June 8, 2024 at his home.
Born October 29, 1927 in Jefferson Twp., he was the son of Merrill Burtner and Florence Parker Burtner.
Coonie served in the Merchant Marines and US Navy during WWII and Korea and was a member of the American Legion Post #6. He retired in 1993 from the Thomas Jefferson Research Laboratory in Newport News, VA, where he worked as an engineer
Surviving are his wife, Celine (Kraus) Burtner, whom he married September 26, 1953, his son, George M. Burtner of Newport News, VA, two daughters, Kim (Friel) Hudson of Roanoke, VA and Kathy B. Smith of Rocky Mount, VA, his brother, James Burtner of Cabot, two sisters, Eva Jean Ohl of Cabot and Nancy (Earl) Mowery of Cabot, three grandchildren, Matthew Hudson, Sarah Hudson and Michelle (Sheldon) Johnson and one great-grandson, Spencer Cole Hudson.
He is preceded in death by his parents one brother Roy Burtner and three sisters, Helen Frenchak, Mary Belle McLaughlin and Margaret Ann Benninger.
Friends will be received on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, 12-2:00 pm at the Fox Funeral Home, Inc., Saxonburg, PA.
Interment will follow in Summit Church Cemetery.
